The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been engaged in a protracted industrial action for the past eight months. The Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA), a rival union that asserts it split from ASUU, claims its members are prepared to end the action.
Misbau Alamu Lateef, the National Legal Adviser of CONUA, stated that there were over 1000 university instructors present and prepared to resume instruction.
After the Nigerian government gave the union a certificate of registration on Tuesday, Lateef made this claim in a statement posted on his Facebook page.
This occurred as negotiations over the 2009 FG/ASUU Agreement on funding higher education, which the government had failed to fully implement, continued between the government and the primary umbrella organization of university lecturers, ASUU.
The National Coordinator of CONUA, a distinct organization having a presence at a few federal universities, is Niyi Sunmonu, a lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
